Game Overview

Betrayal at House on the Hill, published by Avalon Hill in 2004, is a modular horror board game designed for 3–6 players aged 12 and up Players begin as a team of explorers uncovering a mysterious mansion filled with traps, items, events, and omens. The game is played in two main phases: the Exploration phase and the Haunt phase!

Exploration Phase

During the Exploration phase, players move through the mansion, which is built tile by tile as they explore. Each room may contain an Event, Item, or Omen, which players draw and resolve according to the card instructions. Players take turns moving a number of rooms equal to their character’s Speed, and new rooms are added dynamically, making each game unique. This phase is fully cooperative, with all players working together to explore and survive.

Haunt Phase

The Haunt phase begins when a player draws an Omen card and rolls dice, potentially triggering the Haunt. The Omen and the room where it were found determine the specific Haunt scenario and who becomes the traitor. The traitor then leaves the main group to follow a secret objective, while the remaining players, known as the heroes, work together to stop them. Each Haunt scenario is unique, with 50 possible scenarios in the 3rd edition, creating a wide variety of challenges and storylines.

Game Components

The game includes pre-painted character miniatures, character cards, modular room tiles, dice, and tokens, all designed to enhance the spooky atmosphere and streamline gameplay. Players select from six possible characters, each with unique traits and starting skill values, which influence movement, combat, and other actions.
